The debate over whether life coach certification is really worth the investment continues to rage on. After the downturn in the economy, and mass redundancies that followed, many people have chosen coaching as a new career.
The problem now is, with so many people looking to become a life coach, does a life coach certification become more important to maintain quality within the industry or are “new” coaches better off investing their money into learning about business and marketing skills.
If you claim to be a coach, you must have clients to coach. Yet so many coaches end up worrying about where they next client will come from or how to pay the bills next month. That is not a fun situation to be in. It is stressful and hard to keep a brave face on how much you are struggling with running a business.
Most life coach courses do a great job of teaching the coaching tools, but very few actually teach these new coaches how to get clients and make a full time living from the new skills they have paid a lot of money to become a certified life coach with.
My view is that in an unregulated industry, the prospective coach must be clear on what they are looking to achieve. Learning coaching skills is only 50% of the job. Being a shrew business minded person is also vital.
You must know about how to stand out from the crowd and position yourself in the market. You must learn about how to self brand yourself so people want to learn from you.
You must know how to actually make money from life coaching.
Without knowledge of how to do these two important things, a life coach certification is just a waste of money. You might have fun on the course learning about coaching, but that alone will not make you part time income, let along a full time one. Learning a basic business model for life coaching is essential to success.
