There are several groups of people who express an interest in getting tips for becoming a life coach. People looking for a career in which they can make a real impact in others’ lives are in that category. So are people looking for a career in which they can make decent money working from home. - Make a careful selection of a coach training program: nowadays, there are very many training programs aimed at people keen on becoming coaches. Some of these programs are good. Some are not that good. Your choice of a life instructor training program is not one you should take lightly. It is in the course of the training that you will gain the tools you need to become an effective life coach. The sort of life instructor training program you attend, then, will go a long way towards determining how well equipped for the work you turn out to be. It may also have a bearing on how credible (or otherwise) you turn out to be, as a life coach.
- Make a careful selection of a life coaching specialty: as a life instructor, you may specialize in anything, from coaching people on issues to do with their careers and business, to coaching people on issues to do with their relationships, their finances, their health and many other such things. You could, of course, also work as a general life coach. But most people see the need to specialize. Yet the specialty you choose could determine your long term fortunes as a life instructor. You therefore need to put a lot of thought in your choice of specialty.
- Read widely: a life coach needs to have an extensive body of general knowledge, from which they can draw when understanding – and helping their clients understand – their problems. Don’t limit your reading to psychology, philosophy, sociology and anthropology which seem to be obviously relevant to this area. Rather, read as many as you can on different areas because a life instructor is expected to be a truly knowledgeable person about ‘life’ and all that comes with it.
- Network: in the period before, during and after your coach training, you should be networking with other people in the industry – because most business in this area tends to be referral business. But even if you don’t care about referral business, networking will still help you understand how others are doing their thing, so that you don’t end up becoming a ‘lone ranger.’
- Learn some marketing: chances are that you will have to market yourself very effectively, if you are to be successful as a life instructor. Most people who have failed in their life coaching careers turn out to be people who fail due to their poor marketing skills.
- Leverage on the Internet: there are so many ways in which the Internet can help you, as a life instructor. It can be a tool for life coach training (as most life coach training courses are Internet based). It can be a tool for marketing. And it can be a tool for continuing coach education; as it helps you keep in touch with the market, and take note of emerging trends.

Excellent article. being a life coach would be great. Lots of people need to be motivated and have a role model. However there is a lot to consider and learn prior to becoming a successful coach.

As someone who has raised 5 children, one of which is my Grandson, and of the 5, two of them had severe behavioral problems which led to drug addictions, I can say that I can see the positive influence this type of education could have led to better results for these two children. This type of education would greatly improve the chances for children with behavioral problems as well as help for children with learning disabilities.
This is valuable information for me, and also I felt “validated’ regarding my professional approach at the workplace.
I had no knowledge about micro-management, but, intuitivly I felt that I had to choose and “become” somehow people oriented rather than “task-oriented”. The article arrived at the right moment!
